Jackson residents protest proposed tax increases at City Hall: ‘Unfair to the homeowners’

Following a proposed property tax and city vehicle sticker increase, demonstrators gathered outside of Jackson City Hall as councilmembers met inside the building for their monthly work session in preparation for the June 3 council meeting.

More than half a dozen individuals, carrying signs that read “No New Taxes,” collectively expressed their grievances among one another in response to Jackson Mayor Scott Conger’s proposed tax increases.

Conger made a Facebook post May 25 announcing a proposed property tax increase from $1.6114 to $1.85, along with a doubled fee for city vehicle stickers, which is aimed at financing the city’s $3.5 million budget deficit.

Editors Note…. Let’s play a game. Let us say we drop the sales tax we gather with each purchase from 10 % to 5% or even do away with it and double our property tax. What you think would be the impact on the city? I am not talking about revenue alone but the impact on property and property owners.

View it this way: No sales Tax on all products including cars, etc. but property taxes would increase to compensate for loss. What might you think would happen if this was enacted?

How would other counties react?
