JD Vance slammed President Biden for calling Donald Trump supporters “garbage” — saying the commander and chief and his vice president, Kamala Harris, “ought to be ashamed of themselves.”
Trump’s running mate snapped back soon after Biden made his shocking, widely condemned comment during a campaign call at the White House Tuesday.
“A mother mourning her son who died of a fentanyl overdose is not garbage,” Vance wrote in a now-viral retort seen more than 2.4 million times by Wednesday morning.
“A truck driver who can’t afford rising diesel prices is not garbage. A father who wants to afford groceries is not garbage.“
“Kamala Harris and Joe Biden ought to be ashamed of themselves,” he wrote.
Biden called Trump’s supporters “garbage” while rebuking comedian Tony Hinchcliffe for joking at Trump’s mega rally at Madison Square Garden on Sunday that Puerto Rico is a “floating island of garbage.”
“The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters,” Biden said during a campaign call Tuesday.
Earlier Tuesday night, Trump called Biden’s comment “terrible” — saying it was worse than former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton calling his supporters “deplorable” in the lead-up to the 2016 election.
In a transcript of Biden’s comments provided by the White House, his team tried to clarify there was meant to be an apostrophe in “supporters.”
“The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporter’s — his — his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American,” the transcript read.
Biden himself quickly jumped on social media to clarify the remarks.
“Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump’s supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage — which is the only word I can think of to describe it. His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That’s all I meant to say,” he wrote on X.
