Judge Bows Out of Nichols’ Sentencing

A federal judge has recused himself from sentencing two former Memphis police officers convicted in the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols.

Judge Mark Norris, who oversaw the trial of Demetrius Haley, Tadarrius Bean, and Justin Smith, stepped aside just days before Bean and Smith were scheduled to be sentenced on Monday.

The reasons remain sealed, prompting concerns over transparency from attorneys involved. New sentencing dates and a replacement judge have not yet been announced.
