The judge overseeing Donald Trump’s Washington D.C. trial has postponed the trial indefinitely, awaiting a decision on Trump’s appeal on the issue of presidential immunity. On Monday, she indicated the delay could last until late 2024.
Trump’s critics publicly expressed fear that the delay could carry Trump past election day in November. “I am officially now at the freakout stage,” said Obama-era former U.S. Solicitor General Neal Katyal.
At issue is the amount of time the federal appeals court panel is taking to decide the question of presidential immunity. Even after it rules, if he loses, Trump can appeal to the full appeals court and from there to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Special Counsel Jack Smith earlier asked the Supreme Court for an expedited hearing and was turned down.
