The Senate voted 64-35 on Monday to approve an amended Laken Riley Act, sending the legislation back to the House for final consideration and expected passage.
Named after a 22-year-old nursing student who was murdered by an illegal Venezuelan immigrant last year, the act would allow for the mandatory detention of non-citizens convicted of, or charged with, burglary, larceny, theft, or shoplifting.
Some Senate Democrats, despite the bill’s bipartisan support, were frustrated by their inability to amend the legislation as it surpassed the 60-vote filibuster threshold.
The bill will mark the first policy legislation of the new Congress. President Donald Trump said he would sign it “within a week or so.”
