Marvel actor Anthony Mackie issued a new statement on Captain America to course-correct his comments on the patriotic superhero.
Mackie recently stated that Captain America, who he will play in the film Captain America: Brave New World, represents “a lot of different things” but that he personally does not think “the term ‘America’” should be one of the things the hero represents. In a new statement posted to the actor’s Instagram account, Mackie called himself “a proud American” and said Captain America has “universal characteristics that people all over the world can relate to.”
“Let me be clear about this, I’m a proud American and taking on the shield of a hero like CAP is the honor of a lifetime,” Mackie wrote in an Instagram story.
