In an odd move Major League Baseball changed several of its major batting records Wednesday by officially integrating Negro Leagues statistics into its record books
The historic move recognizes the accomplishments of approximately 3,400 players who played in the Negro Leagues between 1920-1948.
Several of baseball’s all-time statistical records have changed as a result of the integration. Catcher Josh Gibson is the new single-season and career leader in batting average, slugging percentage, and OPS, displacing Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth respectively.
