MUTH’S TRUTHS

You Can’t Shrink Big Government Without Firing a Few People

(Chuck Muth) – Every time someone tries to make government smaller – or as our “Reagan Legacy Award” recipient Grover Norquist puts it, small enough to drown in the bathtub – the usual crowd loses its mind.

Right now, it’s over layoffs and firings tied to Elon Musk’s DOGE project. Critics are wailing, whining, and gnashing their teeth over government workers losing their jobs.

Private sector workers who’ve had the same experience are breaking out their “World’s Smallest Violins.”

Look, if you want to cut the cost of government, you have to…cut government.

That means people. Why? Because – like why robbers rob banks – that’s where the money is.

And you can’t make meaningful cuts without eliminating non-essential government jobs. It’s like trying to lose weight without skipping dessert.

In the private sector, when a business is bloated or inefficient, you cut back.

You don’t keep paying people just because they’ve been there a long time or might get their feelings hurt. Government should be no different.

The federal government isn’t a jobs program. It’s not supposed to exist so people can collect a paycheck. It’s supposed to serve the American people. Period.

Every dollar wasted on unneeded personnel is a dollar not spent on fixing roads, protecting the border, helping veterans, or paying down debt.

The folks yelling the loudest?

They’re almost always the ones with skin in the game – government unions, bureaucrats, or the politicians they bankroll.

But if the job isn’t needed, it shouldn’t exist on the taxpayer’s dime. That’s not mean. That’s just math.

So when critics complain about cuts, ask them: Do you want the government to serve the people…or employ the people? Because you can’t have both.

It’s not cruel to trim the fat. It’s common sense. And it’s long overdue.

P.S. Some cheerful news: Wisconsin voters yesterday – while electing a liberal Supreme Court judge (ugh) – also approved adding photo ID to the state’s constitution.

Nevadans will do the same in 2026.

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

“On Tuesday, the Left had their first chance to register anger at Donald Trump and reverse some of the losses in last November’s election. The results were mixed. Republicans kept control of two Florida special elections for House seats, but  Democratic candidates outperformed their normal performance, partly because of lackluster GOP candidates and because the Democrats raised significantly more money in both races.” – Stephen Moore, Committee to Unleash Prosperity
