MUTH’S TRUTHS
Johnathan Gaston, a 43-year-old black man, is being held – without bail, thanks District Court Judge Jerry Wiese – for attempted murder of a police officer and other charges.
According to a Las Vegas Review-Journal story, Gaston attempted to run over Henderson Police Department Sgt. Scott Alward on January 13, “causing Alward to suffer a head injury that required 11 staples.”
The RJ added that “Gaston has an extensive criminal history and previously hit a Metropolitan Police Department vehicle,” leaving one to wonder why the hell he was out on the streets in the first place.
Here’s why: He was supposed to be under house arrest for previous crimes, “but had cut off his monitoring bracelet in October and fled.”
What the RJ story didn’t tell us was the name of the judge who let this career criminal out, thinking an ankle bracelet would keep him from committing additional crimes.
It’s time to start naming names and holding judges accountable for their catch-and-release decisions that allow such criminals to continue preying on Nevadans. They need to be held accountable.
If we’re going to keep electing our judges – and we should – the media needs to do a better job reporting on incidents such as this so voters can make better informed decisions at the polls in the future.
