There were bad bills and there were absurd bills passed by the Democrats in the 2025 session of Nevada Legislature.
Let’s take a look at one of the absurd ones: AB244.
This feel-good, California-like bill was pushed by environmental wackos and would ban restaurants and other food businesses from using Styrofoam containers.
Styrofoam is cheap. Alternatives cost more. And that cost will ultimately be passed on to you, the customer.
Democrats don’t care. But here’s the REAL problem…
A bunch of Republicans voted for this bill, too!
Nine Republicans in the Assembly and four Republicans in the Senate sided with the Democrats in passing AB244.
The good news: Gov. Joe Lombardo vetoed this absurd bill. In his veto message, Lombardo noted…
“The bill raises several significant policy concerns. Most notably, banning polystyrene would lead to higher costs for Nevadans. The bill would trigger at least two immediate price increases.
“Alternatives to polystyrene, such as biodegradable containers and paper-based products, are generally more expensive. As a result, prohibiting certain food service establishments from using polystyrene would directly raise their packaging costs.
“These increased expenses would not be confined to business owners; they are often passed on to consumers, leading to higher prices for everyday goods and services.”
The bad news: It’ll only take ONE Republican in the Senate and the Assembly to vote again with the Democrats to override the governor’s veto.
Republicans are their own worst enemy.
