New Year’s celebrations turned to tragedy in New Orleans after a driver rammed a truck into the crowd at the cities iconic Bourbon Street, killing at least ten and injuring 35 others.
The killer drove a white truck with a black flag on the back through the barricades on the corner of Bourbon and Canal street.
New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell described the assault as a “terrorist attack.” The FBI was investigating possible explosives found at the scene.
The “hell bent” killer engaged in a firefight with cops, injuring at least two, before being shot dead, multiple local outlets reported.
President Joe Biden has spoken to New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell and offered her “full federal support,” White House officials said.
Biden has been briefed on the situation by the FBI, which is leading the investigation, and Homeland Security, and will continue to monitor the situation throughout the day, according to officials.
The two police officers who were injured in a shootout with the alleged terrorist who drove his truck into a crowd of New Year’s celebrants in New Orleans are in stable condition, according to New Orleans City Councilman Oliver Thomas.
Thomas said the officers were being treated at the University Medical Center of New Orleans and thanked the medical staff for treating the first responders.
