Yesterday, House Speaker Mike Johnson’s pathetic bit of congressional kabuki theater came to an embarrassing end, with more than a dozen Republicans refusing to support his spending bill which would have, as usual, cut nothing whatsoever in government spending.
Johnson thought putting in something called the SAVE Act – a supposed election integrity bill that would have been rejected in the Senate and wouldn’t have applied in time for this election in any event – was going to be enough to get the bill over the finish line.
But a small group of budget conscious Republicans saw right through the trick play.
As Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) said days ago, this stunt was “a total bait and switch on the part of Republican (uniparty) leadership in the House. Mike Johnson already has a plan to cave, leaving us with a bill that doesn’t cut one penny of spending.”
It was all an act, and everyone knew it.
But now, Johnson is lamenting he has to go “back to the drawing board” on the spending bill, even though he knew his first plan was a no-go from the get-go, and he knew about the September 30 deadline because that’s the deadline every year, yet Johnson still waited until the end to create an emergency!
Now that they’ve played their little game, it’s time they get serious about spending.
Tell your congressman right now: CUT THE SPENDING!
Frank, our national debt is so out of control that interest payments are now the highest expense in the federal budget. It’s doubled in the last two-and-a-half years.
This really is an emergency! But not the emergency Mike Johnson is talking about.
Our nation is driving off a financial cliff, and Speaker Johnson, most House Republicans, and virtually all House Democrats are hitting the gas pedal!
This is outrageous, and our lawmakers – whether they’re Republicans or Democrats – need to know this is unacceptable.
The spending bill fully funded everything Republicans claim they oppose, from the politicized, weaponized Department of Justice to foreign aid.
The Republicans are giving the same old song and dance, once again. It’s time to grow a spine and oppose the reckless spending.
Unlike many special interest groups out there, we don’t get a dollar of taxpayer money from Washington. But thanks to the support from patriots like you, C4L has always been able to punch above its weight class in Washington.
