Planetary Parade Lines Up in Night Sky

How an artist imagines the planets in our solar system lined up in a row – of course it isn’t quite that straightforward

A rare celestial event will take place tonight and Friday as seven planets—Saturn, Mercury, Neptune, Venus, Uranus, Jupiter, and Mars—become visible in the night sky, creating a striking display of planetary alignment.

The event, known as a “planetary parade,” can be best seen just after sunset today and Friday. This will be the last opportunity to view all seven planets together until 2040.

To see the planetary lineup, start with Venus, Jupiter, and Mars (see photo), the brightest planets visible to the naked eye. Mercury and Saturn need a clear horizon. Uranus may be spotted with binoculars under dark skies, and Neptune requires a telescope.
