Russian Navy Sets Exercise Off Cuba

Russia has moved warships and a nuclear-powered submarine to Cuba to begin air and naval exercises not far from the coast of Florida.

The week-long exercises are touted as part of routine military maneuvers but come amid heightened tensions with the United States over Ukraine. Two American destroyers and two sonar-equipped ships are shadowing the submarine. Here’s a video.

“We’re going to watch it; we’re going to monitor it. We don’t expect that there’ll be any imminent threat or any threat at all,” John Kirby, White House national security spokesman, said.

At the same time, Russia this week has also launched joint nuclear drills with Belarus, simulating the use of battlefield nuclear weapons.
