Safeway, King Soopers Strike Looms

A Colorado labor union representing over 7,000 Safeway and Albertsons employees gave a 72-hour strike notice on Wednesday after failed negotiations over wages, staffing, and benefits.

The union’s contract extension will expire Saturday at 11:59 p.m., meaning a strike could begin Sunday morning. A final offer made by union leaders is set to expire at 5 p.m. today.

Though no official strike date has been set, this is the first time Colorado Safeway workers have voted to strike in almost 30 years. A similar threat looms for King Soopers, whose union members went on a 12-day strike in February. The temporary deal that paused that action expired June 8, with no new agreement reached.
