Officials confirmed that a U.S. tanker carrying jet fuel was struck by a container ship in the North Sea off England’s coast on Monday, causing multiple explosions, fires on both vessels, and a fuel spill.
The Portugal-registered Solong container ship collided with the anchored MV Stena Immaculate, an American-registered ship, rupturing a tank of Jet A-1 fuel intended for U.S. Navy ships.
Lifeboats and aircraft were dispatched to the scene, and all 36 mariners across both crews were rescued, with one person taken to the hospital. See rescue footage here.
The cause of the crash remains undetermined, though heavy fog was reported at the time of the incident.
