Elon Musk’s SpaceX is building a network of hundreds of spy satellites for U.S. intelligence agencies, according to sources familiar with the program.
SpaceX’s Starshield division is launching the network under a $1.8 billion contract signed in 2021 with the National Reconnaissance Office, which oversees spy satellites.
The program underlines the deepening ties between SpaceX and the U.S. government. The low earth-orbiting satellite system would support ground forces and help the military quickly spot potential targets worldwide.
