A Spirit Airlines flight out of Florida was hit by gunfire Monday while attempting to land in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, injuring a flight attendant.
The flight, en route from Fort Lauderdale, was diverted to Santiago, Dominican Republic, where it landed safely.
Toussaint Louverture International Airport grounded all commercial flights following the incident, which occurred just hours before Haiti’s new prime minister was set to be sworn in. The attackers remain unidentified, but the shooting aligns with recent gang violence targeting aircraft in the region. Spirit Airlines confirmed the incident and announced a suspension of service to Haiti.
