President Trump is considering whether violent U.S. citizens can be legally deported to prisons in Central America, the White House confirmed Tuesday.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump is reviewing the legality of sending “egregious, repeat offenders” to facilities like El Salvador’s supermax CECOT prison.
In a recent interview with Fox Noticias, Trump praised El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele for his tough approach to crime and said he was impressed by the country’s prison system.
Referring to violent offenders as “homegrown criminals,” Trump said they have no place in American communities. However, legal experts warn the proposal could face serious constitutional challenges.
