A Utah State University football player is trading in his future in the sport to serve his country, giving up another season of football to join the Navy SEALs.
Quarterback Levi Williams made his announcement through a podcast appearance, during which he expressed his love for the sport but knew his playing days were “going to come to an end,” according to KSL Sports. His announcement comes only a few days after he helped the Aggies defeat the University of New Mexico, 44-41, and secure bowl eligibility.
“I just want to be in a spot where I can protect this great country where we get to play football with the freedom to do that,” Williams said. “I think this is the best country in the world, so I’d like to keep it that way and protect it as long as I can.”
Williams said serving the United States “kind of runs in the family.” His mother served in the U.S. Army , and his grandparents served in both the Army and the Navy.
The quarterback said he explained to his fiancee that “God’s calling me” when he informed her of his plans to serve. He said she understood, as she has a father who had served in the Army.
“Obviously, we can’t prepare for everything,” Williams said. “There’s going to be some unexpected turns along the way. As long you trust God and trust me, I think we’re going to be alright.”
Williams explained that the SEALs’ motto “that no one guy is better than the other” and that all members are required to complete a mission given to them is what appealed to him.
