(Chuck Muth) – The “Woke Virus” pandemic has already infected many on the left, and a new outbreak has struck UNLV.
Last weekend, the Environmental Law Society at the Boyd School of Law had scheduled a picnic to be held at Lake Mead.
But apparently some “woke warriors” got their nose bent out of shape and pitched up a storm. That led to the Society sending out the following notice days before the scheduled event…
“Hello Boydians! In light of recent information regarding historical and offensive connotations associated with the word ‘picnic,’ we have chosen to rename our event to ‘Lunch by the Lake.’ The Environmental Law Society strongly promotes diversity and inclusion, and we sincerely apologize for any harm or discomfort the initial title may have caused.”
How asinine. And these people are going to be LAWYERS some day?
The woke crowd’s war on “picnics” isn’t something new. Dave Huber of The College Fix reports that a similar effort to ban “picnics” was launched back in 2020 at the University of Michigan.
The allegation was that people who attended lynchings often held picnics while watching the hangings and, therefore, the picnics themselves were racist.
In response, Reuters reported: “Fact check: The word picnic does not originate from racist lynchings.”
David Pilgrim, curator of the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia, said “it’s possible someone used the word ‘picnic’ to refer to lynchings, but what we know for a fact is that’s not where the word ‘picnic’ came from.”
Indeed, Huber notes that the word “picnic” actually “comes from the 300-plus-year-old French word ‘pique-nique,’ meaning a potluck-like social gathering.”
Which is exactly how the Society characterized it’s gathering: “This is a potluck event, so we encourage everyone to bring along some snacks or dishes to share.”
Anyone who felt “harmed’ or “uncomfortable” by the word “picnic” shouldn’t be in a college or university classroom. They should be in a padded room, fitted with a straight-jacket, and administered lots of anti-woke medication.
And they can watch me having a picnic outside their window. Pass the deviled eggs!
BREAKING: This Just In…
Republicans have settled on Steve Scalise as the new House Speaker. In a secret GOP caucus ballot, Scalise won 113 votes to Jim Jordan’s 99.
Nevada Rep. Mark Amodei confirms he voted for Scalise. Now as long as 217 members of the caucus vote for him on the floor, this Speaker kerfuffle can be put in the rearview mirror.
And while I’m on this subject…
Establishment Republicans are having a cow over the eight conservative GOP members who voted to remove former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, which was accomplished after every Democrat in the House voted for his ouster as well.
I’m hearing a lot of bitching and kvetching that this small minority of conservative Republicans wields so much power to counter the position of the vast majority of Republicans in the House.
I don’t know if what the eight did was the right call or not. Conservatives of good conscience can agree to disagree on this. However…
Have you noticed the same people who want to tar-and-feather the eight conservatives are pretty much the same people who never said a peep when liberal Republicans such as Sens. Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, Mitt Romney, and Lisa Murkowski voted with Democrats to pass liberal bills opposed by the vast majority of their GOP colleagues?
Why is it OK for a handful of liberal Republicans to vote with liberal Democrats and spit in the eyes of conservative Republicans but it’s not OK for a handful of conservative Republicans to return the favor?

I just want to thank everyone who responded to my request for opinions on the Nevada U.S. Senate race yesterday. Great feedback. Helped me a lot.
Interestingly, the majority of opinions I received on the various candidates are pretty well encapsulated by this one response I received this morning…
“I agree (Sam) Brown needs more than ‘I was injured’ story. (Jim) Marchant is a loser. Don’t know (Jeff) Gunter. I just met Tony Grady and fell in love! How do we get him a money machine?”
Indeed, many of the responses related to Brown were along the lines of “We respect and appreciate your sacrifice on the battlefield, but we already know about that and are tired of hearing it. Tell us what you’ll do as our senator and how we’ll benefit from it.”
Also got a number of responses heralding Tony Grady as the best-qualified person for the job. But as I teach in my campaign training seminars, it’s not the best candidate who wins. It’s the best campaign. And campaigns cost money.
Tony really needs to step up his game if he’s to have any shot.
The responses about Marchant were few but mostly along the same line: He’s a serial loser who can’t win a general election. He should drop out.
As for Dr. Gunter and his campaign strategy of running as THE Trump candidate, the majority of those mentioning him stated they’d never heard of him.
As for opinions on whether Trump’s backing would help or hurt him, they were pretty much split; with some saying they’ll follow Trump’s lead while others say a Trump endorsement would have the exact opposite effect.
Or as one person wrote: “If one (candidate) would come out and be an avowed anti-Trump candidate, I would give them a hard look.”
Anyway, I very much appreciate the feedback.
And in light of your responses, I’m going to continue staying neutral in this race for a while and see how things shake out. We still have five months before filing for office opens next March.
