A letter to all of you…..

My daughter, St. Jude patient Luna, with her brother and me

My dear daughter, Luna, is back home with us in Guatemala. Since she was diagnosed at age 2 with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common cancer in children, we have lived through a series of emotional ups and downs.

She received treatment for two years in Guatemala, before relapsing. Doctors told us there was an ounce of hope outside the borders of our country and referred us to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Relief came. I felt they would help her and not let her die.

She spent nearly four years in Memphis, where she received two bone marrow transplants and CAR T-cell therapy. My husband traveled with Luna to Tennessee. I was able to visit Luna soon after, but every time I left, it was difficult because she was still facing this terrible disease.

When doctors told us earlier this year she was better and could return to Guatemala, we were full of joy and hope. I wanted to welcome her home the way she deserved.

Her little brother went to work to buy her a gift and sold carrots where I work as a horse-riding instructor. Everyone knew Luna and supported him. He raised enough to buy a doll and flowers.

The day Luna arrived at the airport, her brother held the bouquet of flowers. Luna’s grandparents and I couldn’t contain our joy.

Our family is back together. Luna is here thanks to all the donations made by the people who support this great hospital.

Luna celebrated her 9th birthday earlier this month. She lives thanks to you.

Grescia,

Luna’s mom
