Amazon Prime Video began charging subscribers an extra 2.99 a month Monday to remove ads from its programming.
Pushback to the move was fierce on social media. Customers pay their $14.99 a month to Prime for free shipping and, until now, the ad-free TV service was thrown in for free.
Amazon has 200 million Prime subscribers, making it one of the biggest ad platforms available. Analysts said the ads could generate an extra $3 billion-$4 billion in the next two years, plus another $500 million of fees to avoid ads.
