Former Hamilton County teacher arrested, charged with aggravated statutory rape

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. — Online records show a Hamilton County teacher who was suspended earlier this year on suspicion of an inappropriate relationship with a student has now been arrested and booked.

Deputies with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) arrested 28-year-old Casey McGrath last Friday, and charged her with aggravated statutory rape.

McGrath had only been suspended last April while investigators looked into the case.

But Hamilton County Schools spokesman Steve Doremus confirmed with us on Monday that McGrath is now no longer an employee of the district.

On Tuesday, we received a copy of the indictment against McGrath.

It says McGrath engaged in sexual activity with someone between the ages of 13 and 18 on May 1st, 2022.

Back in April, we were allowed to review McGrath’s personnel file. Those files show McGrath was suspended with pay and under investigation for ‘inappropriate physical contact with a student that does not result in harm.’ Elsewhere in the file, it says the inappropriate contact was “of a sexual nature.”

The file also reveals that while McGrath taught algebra at Central High School since 2020, she also taught at East Ridge Middle School in the past.

An article on the Central High School Digest website says McGrath began working at Central High as a geometry teacher in 2020.

Before that, her file says she taught at East Ridge Middle School in the past.
