Wilkinson nabbed a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his role as Sissy Spacek’s husband in the 2001 drama, “In The Bedroom.” He was also nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role opposite George Clooney in 2005’s “Michael Clayton.”

In 2009, he won both a Golden Globe and an Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Film for his role as Benjamin Franklin in the HBO miniseries “John Adams.”

Aspiring to be an actor from a young age, Wilkinson attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, graduating in 1973.

Over the next two decades, he appeared in British TV shows and movies before scoring his big break in the 1993 Daniel Day-Lewis drama “In The Name of The Father.”

He subsequently went on to star opposite Kate Winslet in Ang Lee’s 1995 adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility.”

Two years later, Wilkinson became famous around the world with his appearance in the wildly popular UK comedy “The Full Monty,” which grossed more than $250 million at the international box office.

Wilkinson played Gerald Cooper, a foreman who teamed up with other laid-off factory workers to start a male stripping troupe. He won a prestigious BAFTA award for his role in the ensemble flick.

From there, the actor scored several roles in huge Hollywood hits, including “Rush Hour” and “Shakespeare In Love,” for which he won a Screen Actors Guild Award.

In addition to the Oscar-nominated roles in “In The Bedroom” and “Michael Clayton,” he also appeared in a slew of critically acclaimed movies including “Girl With A Pearl Earring,” “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” “Valkyrie,” “The Lone Ranger,” and “Selma.”

He also appeared in the beloved British comedy “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” (2011), and it’s smash-hit sequel.

Earlier this year, Wilkinson revived his role as Gerald Cooper for a TV adaptation of “The Fully Monty,” which premiered in June on FX on Hulu.
