Good Morning!

On this date in 1917, the Senate passed the 18th Amendment to the Constitution, prohibiting the “manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors.” Prohibition became a loosely enforced law in 1920 and remained in force until 1933.

As of late last night, very little was known about the car that smashed into a Secret Service vehicle while President Biden was in the vicinity. The president heard the crash and was quickly driven away as the driver of the vehicle was surrounded.

America’s Town Hall: Historians Lisa Andersen and Josh Zeitz explore the history and politics of Prohibition, including its impact on federal power and civil liberties. Jeffrey Rosen, president and CEO of the National Constitution Center, moderates.
