“The Jackson Animal Care Center is a managed intake municipal shelter that works with Animal Control to make Jackson a great place for pets and their humans. JACC does not euthanize because “their time is up” or for space but depends heavily on community involvement and rescue placement partners to make this goal sustainable.”
In that post above the Care Center states that the city’s group works with Animal Control. It does not define, on the site, which Animal Control that is because after a recent conversation with a Madison County’s animal control department employee there is no co-action with the city by the county.
Politically, Animal Control is define as an office or department responsible for enforcing ordinances relating to the control, impoundment, and disposition of animals. Since the 1950’s, in Madison County, disposition meant euthanasia by gas or injection after an appointed time if no one claimed the animal. The appointed time could be from 3 to 5 to 7 days. County Animal Control centers generally, in Tennessee, fell under the eyes of County Health Departments and later directly under county governments.
My point for this is, under its current guidelines, the Jackson Animal Care Center is not a sustainable entity and never will be. Everyday that unadoptable animals are not transferred to other rescue groups or found homes locally is more and more money coming out your household expenses, feeding your children and your own animals. Millions of dollars are spent trying to keep up and it will continue unless you do something about it.
My suggestion is to return this responsibility to the county and close the care center. It has been a failure and a money pit.
