Kyrsten Sinema to Leave the Senate

Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema announced she wouldn’t seek reelection Tuesday, saying the federal government has been weakened by dysfunction and political extremes.

Sinema is in her first term and publicly switched party affiliation from Democrat to Independent in 2022. Her exit means Arizona voters will likely see a Senate race between Republican Kari Lake and Democrat Ruben Gallego.

In a video posted to social media, Sinema said she was leaving the Senate because she believes in “civility, understanding, listening, working together to get stuff done.”
