Sen. Chris Murphy Tells MSNBC Host Illegal Migrants Are ‘People We Care About Most’

Connecticut Democrat Sen. Chris Murphy detailed Wednesday to MSNBC how illegal migrants are the people liberals “care about most.”

Murphy appeared on “All In with Chris Hayes” to discuss the recent Senate border bill which was blocked by Republicans on Wednesday. MSNBC host Chris Hayes questioned the Connecticut senator on the bill’s failed ending and pointed out that the negotiations had been “entirely” on the GOP’s terms by excluding Democrats’ well-known want of a “path to citizenship.”

Murphy stated that the “play” for Democrats to include a path to citizenship has “failed” within the last “30 years” which has neglected to deliver for the undocumented Americans whom they “care about most.” The Connecticut senator stated that due to the alarming increase of illegal migrants crossing over Americans “reality” has changed around the views on the border crisis.

“Well, I mean, Chris, that’s been a failed play for 20 years. So you are right that that has been the democratic strategy for 30 years, maybe, and it has failed to deliver for the people we care about most, the undocumented Americans that are in this country,” Murphy stated.

“This is also not 2013 any longer, when we ran that play last. Back then, there were a couple hundred people showing up every day applying for asylum. Today, on some days there are 8,000. And the reality is that the bulk of this country does not think that’s right or sustainable and wants us to change the reality at the border.”

“So I know there’s a temptation for Democrats, and I know you weren’t looking for this argument, but I think there is a temptation to just run the same play we always run, because we know how to run it. But when it hasn’t worked, and when the country is actually demanding that we do something to make the border more manageable, I think we do have a right and a responsibility to adjust to that reality,” Murphy stated.

Murphy continued to state the inclusions of left-leaning policies within the bill that were “substantial for people” who “actually care about migrants.” While Murphy called out Republicans for using the border crisis as their “perennial election year issue,” he stated the bill “didn’t matter” in the end due to the GOP

NBC News host asks DHS Sec. Mayorkas point blank: ‘Why do you deserve to keep your job?’

Mayorkas also told NBC he does not bear responsibility for a ‘broken’ immigration system

NBC news host Kristen Welker asked Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas point-blank on Sunday if he deserved to keep his job over the crisis at the southern border.

“You have now been in your position for three years and let’s talk about what’s happened during those three years. More migrants have crossed the border illegally last year than ever before. The asylum cases backlog has more than tripled since 2019. You yourself have said that more than 85% of migrants crossing the border illegally are being released into the U.S. as they await their court dates. Let’s just put impeachment aside for a minute. Why do you deserve to keep your job, Mr. Secretary?” Welker asked.

Mayorkas said the data Welker cited was a “powerful example” of why legislation was needed to fix a broken immigration system.

“Let’s take a look before the last three years. That case backlog, which is about 3 million cases has been growing year over year over year. The time between when we encounter an individual at the boarder and the time of final adjudication of an asylum case has been years. Five to seven years, for years and years. I remember when I entered the Department of Homeland Security in 2009, we were wrestling with these very same issues,” he added.

Welker also asked about the House GOP’s efforts to impeach Mayorkas, and said they were “serious allegations.”

“They’re baseless allegations, Kristen, and that’s why I am not distracted by them and focused on the work of the Department of Homeland Security. I’m inspired every single day by the remarkable work that 260,000 men and women in our department perform on behalf of the American public. I’ve got a busy day today after the show, a busy day of work. I’ve got a busy day Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and so on,” he responded during his media appearance

The NBC News host further questioned Mayorkas on whether he bears some responsibility for the crisis at the border.

“It certainly is a crisis, and we don’t bear responsibility for a broken system, and we’re doing a tremendous amount within that broken system, but fundamentally, fundamentally, Congress is the only one who can fix it,” Mayorkas said.

Commentary: Biden’s Shameful Border Legacy in Tennessee Is Human Trafficking

Every January, law enforcement agencies and advocacy groups mark National Human Trafficking Prevention Month to focus public attention on this horrific crime and its devastating impact on the victims involved. Once again, the Biden Administration is calling attention to the Department of Homeland Security’s broader “Blue Campaign” to combat human trafficking.

This is a laudable campaign, but it is terribly undermined by the reality that DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas happens to be one of the greatest enablers of human trafficking in U.S. history. The mass migration crisis triggered by the Biden administration’s reckless immigration policies has caused incalculable harm not only to American communities and the integrity of our immigration system but also, tragically, to many of the migrants themselves, who are lured into the clutches of traffickers.

As a result, incidents of border-related human trafficking have exploded, both nationwide and in Tennessee.  Law enforcement agencies report a significant spike in incidents of labor and commercial sex trafficking of non-citizens — particularly cases involving minors.   Historically high numbers of illegal migrants, enticed by the Biden Administration’s policies, are smuggled across the border by transnational criminal organizations. This is facilitated by government agencies and contractors who funnel them through lenient processing with little vetting and then resettle them, while turning a blind eye to the abuse and exploitation occurring under their watch.Just last month, Tennessee investigators busted a commercial sex trafficking ring operating out of a Super 8 Motel in Murfreesboro.  The accused ringleader, a 50-year-old Venezuelan woman, enslaved women from South and Central America after enticing them into the United States – an enterprise that would be much more difficult without Biden policies that have allowed tens of thousands of migrants from Venezuela and other countries to enter without visas.

From the very beginning of his presidency, President Biden began dismantling a long list of policies that had succeeded in controlling the years-long wave of illegal migrants exploiting our dysfunctional asylum system and court rulings mandating the release of minors and those arriving with minors into the country. Not surprisingly, this has led to an explosion in the number of illegal border crossers,  attributed by migrants to Biden’s “invitacion.”

Most problematic are Biden policies that virtually guarantee the release of the unaccompanied minor to a sponsor in the United States.  Last year, more than 113,000 such minors were released to a sponsor, including more than 4,500 in Tennessee, with the largest number in Davidson and Shelby counties.  Smugglers persuade parents, primarily Central American countries, into sending their children in pursuit of a “better life,” often resulting in forced labor debt bondage in factories and on farms, or worse

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – In the fall of 2023, the City of Franklin received a notice from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that nearly 600 noncitizens going through the immigration process could travel to Middle Tennessee.

In the notice, Homeland Security specifically named Nashville, Davidson County, Murfreesboro and Franklin.

DHS offered no specifics of when or how many immigrants might be brought to Franklin versus the other cities named, the City of Franklin said.

The notice sent by DHS was titled: Intended Destination of Noncitizens Processed at the Southwest Border. It detailed the department’s processing of noncitizens at the border, what happens once they’re released from custody after processing, and their travel to listed intended destinations following their release.

“For the week ending September 16, 2023, 573 noncitizens provided an intended destination in your Core Based Statistical Area,” DHS said in its notice when mentioning Nashville, Davidson County, Murfreesboro and Franklin.
