Embattled New York City Mayor Eric Adams borrowed a page from Chicago’s playbook and went after bus companies that transport illegal migrants to his “sanctuary” city. On Wednesday, the Democrat announced an executive order to try to stem the influx.
Charter bus companies will now be required to give the city a 32-hour notice before arriving in the Big Apple.
The buses must now show up between 8:30 a.m. and noon on weekdays only. They are also permitted to only drop off their passengers at one specific location designated by the city unless informed otherwise.
Violators may face a class B misdemeanor, fines, and even impoundment. This follows the blueprint established by Chicago in attempting to turn back the asylum seekers.
The goal, of course, is to halt the transportation of illegal migrants by Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. Adams said as much on Wednesday
The mayor stated “We really are saying to bus operators and companies, do not participate in Gov. Abbott’s actions. We want them to take the appropriate actions of being responsible by taking those actions during the hours we are laying out.”
Millions of illegal migrants have crossed the nation’s southern border under President Joe Biden’s watch. Of that sum, roughly 160,000 made their way to New York City.
Some 27,000 of those were with the help of Gov. Abbott. But that total is a small part of what Texas and other states are dealing with, and New York City along with Chicago are fighting back despite being “sanctuaries.”
Adams insisted the executive order was for the sake of those being bused to the city. “To be clear, this is not stopping people from coming, but about ensuring the safety of migrants and making sure they can arrive in a coordinated and orderly way.”
Which, incidentally, is far different from the way they arrive in Texas.
New York and Chicago are now also receiving migrants on plane flights, part of what Adams called Abbott’s “cruel and inhumane politics.” He said that 14 chartered buses arrived one night last week and others are coming in on airline flights.
Abbott’s office struck back. “The hypocrisy of Mayor Adams is astounding. Mayor Adams had touted New York City’s self-declared sanctuary city status, then sent his own buses of migrants out to small towns in New York.”
The Republican also noted that the Biden administration flies migrants all across the country, “oftentimes in the cover of night.”
