Gary Varvel: Nikki’s impossible mission

God’s plan for Israel

Mission: Impossible starring Nikki Haley. According to CNN exit polls, 70 percent of Haley’s voters in the New Hampshire primary were NOT Republican. Conversely, 70 percent of Trump’s voters were Republican. That is a bad sign for Nikki’s campaign. You may like her, but from where I sit, there is no path for her to win the nomination. She may grit her teeth and hold on but this is impossible.

God’s plan for Israel

I’m always amused by some of the mocking I get on Instagram. According to the Biblically illiterate, I believe in fairy tales. If they only knew history and the Bible, they would see that everything that God said would happen to Israel has come true and is coming true before our eyes.

Parts 1 and 2 covered God’s choice and purpose for the Jews. Now let’s look at God’s plan to save the Jewish people.

In Daniel 9 we learn about God’s plan from the angel Gabriel when he interrupts Daniel’s prayer and reveals 6 events that will be accomplished in order to restore Israel’s relationship with God and establish the kingdom of God on earth.

Daniel 9:24

“Seventy weeks are determined
For your people and for your holy city,

To finish the transgression,
To make an end of sins,
To make reconciliation for iniquity,
To bring in everlasting righteousness,
To seal up vision and prophecy,
And to anoint the Most Holy.”

Seventy weeks means seventy-sevens of years — or 490 years. This time period is determined for “your people” (the Jews) and your holy city (Jerusalem).

Of these 6 events mentioned, only “reconciliation for iniquity” was been accomplished when Jesus Christ died on the cross for the sins of humanity satisfying God’s justice and holiness. The rest indicate a new redeemed world.

Daniel 9:25

“Know therefore and understand,
That from the going forth of the command
To restore and build Jerusalem
Until Messiah the Prince,
There shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks;
The street shall be built again, and the wall,
Even in troublesome times.”

The 490 year countdown was to begin with a command to rebuild Jerusalem and the Temple and the wall. From 538 BC to 445 BC, there were 4 different commands by Persian kings but only the last one made to Nehemiah included the wall “in troublesome times.”

Notice also that from the time of the decry to rebuild Jerusalem until “Messiah the Prince” comes, there would be 483 years (seven weeks plus sixty-two weeks = 69 weeks). Sir Robert Anderson’s significant work The Coming Prince, says that Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem (Luke 19:35-40). But the Jewish leaders rejected Jesus as their king.

Daniel 9:26a:

“And after the sixty-two weeks
Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself…”

“Cut off” means killed. “Not for Himself” means the Messiah would be killed for other people. This is not the only scripture that says the Messiah would die for the transgressions of others. Isaiah 53 also prophesies this event and says, “He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death.” (Isaiah 53:9)

Jesus was crucified between 2 thieves but was buried in a rich man’s tomb. Three days later, he rose to life making it possible for “many to be counted righteous” by believing in Him. Listen, can you think of anyone else in history who has accomplished this?

Many Bible scholars believe that when the Messiah was cut off, God paused at the 69th week and the gospel was spread to the Gentile nations. The first 3 chapters of the Book of Revelation, are addressed to 7 Christian churches. But starting with chapter 4, the church is not mentioned again until chapter 18 because the church is no longer on the earth. I believe Christians will be raptured to heaven before the 70th week.

Daniel 9:26b:

And the people of the prince who is to come
Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.
The end of it shall be with a flood,
And till the end of the war desolations are determined.

This verse says that there is a prince (lower case ‘p’) “who is to come” and has his ancestral roots in the ancient Roman Empire because they are the ones who destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple.

Notice also that the Messiah has to die before the Temple is destroyed. Since the Temple was destroyed in 70 AD, forty years after Jesus died and rose again, who else could possibly be the Messiah if not Jesus?

Daniel 9:27:

“Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week;
But in the middle of the week
He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.
And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate,
Even until the consummation, which is determined,
Is poured out on the desolate.”

This prince will confirm a covenant (peace agreement) with many (Jews and its neighbors) for one week (7 years). This agreement will restart the countdown of the final 70th week. This will be the 7-year Tribulation Period detailed in the book of Revelation. The prince who will make the peace agreement will be the antichrist.

At the midway point of the 7-year Tribulation, the antichrist will enter the newly built Temple in Jerusalem, stop the daily sacrifices and proclaim himself to be god (2 Thessalonians 2:3-4; Revelation 13).

By the end of the Tribulation Period, the six events written in Daniel 9:24 will be accomplished. Jesus will return as King, win the Battle of Armageddon and reign on earth in everlasting righteousness.

Unfortunately, most Jewish people are in unbelief. Why? The Apostle Paul explains:

Romans 11:25, “…Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in, and in this way all Israel will be saved.”

God is not finished with Israel. When they see Bible prophecy being fulfilled during the Tribulation Period and hear the gospel proclaimed, they will respond and God spirit will be poured out on them.

Zechariah 12:10 says, “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.”
